The noblest species of the Amazon

is in critical danger of extinction

Welcome to ACOBIA-DWAzoo’s home on the net.  ACOBIA-DWAzoo is a non-governmental volunteer organization in Iquitos, Peru that is trying to save one of our most precious rainforest mammals from extinction. Its educational work is funded solely by donations from its supporters.

The Trichechus inunguis is one of four manatee species in the world. Its habitat is restricted to the Amazon basin, from the island of Marajó in Brazil to the Ucayali and Napo rivers in Peru and Ecuador. They can be found in rivers, lakes, tributaries and flooded planes. Due to illegal hunting and the continuing loss of habitat, the Amazon manatee is critically endangered.  ACOBIA-DWAzoo is doing its utmost to save as many manatee orphans as it can, while educating the local population about why the manatee must be protected and how urgent the situation is.

Please take a look around on our site to find out more about this precious animal, and what you can do to help. Click here for the next page.
