SOME FACTS AND FIGURES

DSC04875

Female sexual activity starts between 4 and 5 years of age. Male sexual activity starts even later; at 7 to 9 years of age. The gestation period is estimated to be 12 to 13 months.

Newborns start to eat aquatic plants after 1 to 2 months, but they continue breastfeeding for up to 2 years.

An adult manatee can stay under water for up to 20 minutes. Under normal circumstances, they come up to breath every 4 to 5 minutes.

The manatee can fast for prolonged periods of time, due to their ability to store large amounts of fat under their skin. It is estimated that they can survive without eating for up to 7 months, while subsisting on their fat.

The Amazonian manatee has been observed to spend 8 hours per day eating, 4 hours sleeping and 12 hours in constant movement. It has few natural predators: caiman and jaguars.
