you bring brand
new, undamaged bills. Before leaving for Peru, go to your bank clerk
and insist on withdrawing unused bills. Bills with even the slightest damage will NOT be
accepted here. Bills that are rejected for being damaged are sometimes
accepted by the local cambistas
(money changers) that you will encounter hanging around on the corners of
Próspero, Morona and Sargento Lores Streets.
But beware; these
people cannot be trusted. They have a bad reputation. As a gringo, you
are an easy target, because they believe you won’t come back to
complain, after you discover that they have shortchanged you, given you
counterfeit money or an outrageously bad rate.
Don’t think it won’t happen to you!
They are very streetwise and they will rob you without you even noticing
it. They will accept your damaged dollar or euro bill, but only at a very
bad rate. If you can, save your bill until you get home and spend it there.
Our advice; avoid the cambistas.
Go to the bank instead.
