We are committed to helping our homeless youth.
We want to finance a shelter for the homeless, a safe place where they can
sleep, eat, bathe and clothe themselves, and where they have access to
education, medical and dental care.
We want to take a non-partisan, non-religious,
non-judgmental and non-restrictive approach. We want to create a welcoming
environment with as few rules as possible.
In time we would like to see some of these young
people get involved in social programs and activities, providing a positive
role model to their peers.
By meeting the basic primary needs of these
young people, we achieve two things:
·
Crime is
reduced for lack of necessity
·
Young
people can start to focus on spending their time in a productive, positive
way, other than just finding food, clothing and shelter

Finding
a good location and getting it ready for daily operations, will cost about
5000 dollars. That will pay for the first rent, for kitchen facilities and
for 50 beds.
Operating the shelter will cost
about 1000 dollars per month, for rent and utilities, maintenance, laundry,
food, clothes, medical care and a host of minor monthly expenses.
We think that 1000 dollars per month
is a small price to pay for being able to offer our young street kids not
just a safe place to sleep, eat and bathe, but also a chance at an
education, some self-respect and a better life.

.
Paso a Paso means “step by step”. This is our
approach to improving the situation many children, teenagers and young
adults live in. These are young people who work –and often live- on
the streets. They have learned to

depend
on themselves and to distrust
others. It is very hard to reach these young people, and even harder to gain
their trust. We have no illusions about welcoming dozens of homeless and
semi-homeless kids on opening day. We do believe that just by being
available, by offering continuity in our services, we will start to gain
their trust, build a reputation within the homeless ‘community’
and build a relationship based on experience and word of mouth.
